CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is currently available with the Division of Laboratory Systems (DLS) within the Center for Surveillance, Epidemiology, and Laboratory Services (CSELS) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

Research Project: Under the guidance of a collaborative team, the selected research participant may be involved in the following opportunities:
(1) support scientific activities of the Division of Laboratory Systems,
(2) conduct reviews of published and grey literature,
(3) develop protocols to collect, enter and manage data,
(4) conduct quantitative analysis of large public health datasets, and prepare reports and manuscripts for dissemination of scientific findings.
The participant will be expected to make contributions in the general areas of creation of a dashboard of clinical laboratory capabilities, studies of the equity of access to clinical laboratory testing, and analyses of clinical laboratory infrastructure.
(1) Gain knowledge about CDC studies of emerging public health issues,
(2) gain background knowledge of important issues related to public health,
(3) gain experience with new and existing data sources,
(4) gain knowledge about how to work collaboratively and across disciplines to address a complex public health issue, and
(5) improve communication skills by presenting at meetings

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: 2022 or early 2023. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.
Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.
Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens and Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR).
ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

The qualified candidate should have received a master’s or doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within the past five years.
Preferred skills, training, or experience include:
(1) training or experience in clinical laboratory medicine and/or public health laboratory science,
(2) training or experience in quantitative methods,
(3) demonstrated data management and analytical skills, including experience/proficiency with statistical computing (e.g., R),
(4) demonstrated technical writing and oral communication skills,
(5) some interest and experience in data visualization
