The Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health invites applications and nominations for a new position of Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ADDEI), to lead the next stage of the School’s longstanding DEI work. Founded in 1922, Columbia Mailman is one of the oldest and most highly respected graduate schools of public health in the nation and is consistently ranked among the top five schools of public health. A recognized, innovative pacesetter in research and education, and of translation to impact, Columbia Mailman is recognized among peers for its novel approaches and commitment to becoming a diverse, antiracist, multicultural, and fully inclusive institution in all aspects of its culture and operations. As Columbia Mailman begins its second century in fall 2022, it seeks a strong expert to lead the School’s diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging efforts.
Reporting to the Dean, serving as a member of, and with partnership by, the senior leadership team, and working with faculty, students, staff, and alumni, the ADDEI will develop and lead the School’s overarching DEI strategy. The ADDEI will partner with other leaders and all community members as appropriate, coordinate and enhance existing programs and initiatives embedded throughout the School, and shape and launch new programs, partnerships, and initiatives to advance DEI. Further, the ADDEI will oversee the Office of Diversity, Culture, and Inclusion (ODCI), and serve as chair of FORWARD (Fighting Oppression, Racism and White Supremacy through Action, Research and Discourse), the permanent structure to the Dean through which more than 100 faculty, staff, students, and alumni are actively engaged in the School’s ongoing change process.
The successful candidate will be an experienced leader and subject matter expert in DEI. The ADDEI will be innovative, resourceful, and creative as well as a skilled communicator and relationship-builder capable of facilitating courageous conversations and working through discourse across lines of difference; building a culture of inclusion and shared aspirations. This position offers an accomplished professional the opportunity to coalesce recent advances, build new programs and initiatives, and collaborate across a School dedicated to innovation.
