Public Health Nurse

The Village of Hales Corners (pop. 7720) Health Department seeks a Part Time Public Health Nurse. The Public Health Nurse Provides nursing support to the Health Department under general supervision of the Health Officer. Work involves promotion of positive health practices and the prevention of disease in a variety of community settings. Work includes the conducting of clinics, home visits, school and community education and communicable disease control. In addition to the day-to-day operational support, Public Health Nurses are expected to assist with obtaining information and resources needed for grant-writing, fundraising, volunteer recruitment, and new program development. Responsible for assisting Health Department to develop and implement community health program to support the needs of the community and the strategic direction of the organization. A bachelor of science in nursing or other accreditation as indicated on DHS 139.08 with current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Wisconsin is required. Previous public health experience is preferred. The Village provides a paid vacation and holidays as well as Wisconsin Retirement System pension participation. Pay range: $27.77-$31.72 per hour. Public Health Nurses carry out the core functions and essential services of public health using knowledge from nursing, social and public health sciences to protect and promote the health of populations. Provides general public health nursing care for individuals and families through home, office, or telephone visits utilizing the nursing process
Provides screening, referral and follow-up for identifying health needs
Provides health counseling and education in a variety of community settings
Documents all public health nursing activities
Coordinates public health nursing care with other health care providers and allied health personnel
Provides appropriate prevention and control of communicable diseases through education and intervention to protect the health of the community
Plans, organizes, implements, and evaluates public health clinics
Coordinates assigned public health programs, grant activities, and portions of the community health improvement plan
Participates in public health emergency preparedness planning, response and recovery
Participates in community assessment and the development of community health improvement plans
Participates in health related community partnerships
Assists in the collection of data for statistical information
Participates in staff development programs and ongoing education to maintain an up-to-date knowledge of public health issues and current nursing practices

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Normal days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Evenings and weekends as needed.
Required Education/ Preferred Training and Experience
Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing, or equivalent, or other accreditation as indicated in DHS 139.08 with current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Wisconsin. Previous Public Health Nursing experience preferred. CPR certification desirable.
· Excellent interpersonal/communication skills.
· Possession and maintenance of a valid Wisconsin driver’s license.
· Ability to deal diplomatically with the public and other city departments.
· Must have the ability to be bonded.
