Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in genetics, biology, chemistry or a related field and two years of research experience; or a Master’s degree in a related field and one year of research experience.

 

This position requires that the incumbent will report to the official work location and live within commuting distance to the official work location. Telecommuting may not be available. If telecommuting is available, the incumbent will be required to have a telephone/mobile device, and internet access.

Preferred Qualifications
NYS Clinical Lab License; at least three years of experience in medical technology, microbiology or molecular biology, as well as performing testing on clinical specimens in a BSL-2 and BSL-3 laboratory. Experience analyzing data, preparing data summaries, performing literature review, and writing scientific papers.

Responsibilities
The Research Scientist I (RSI) will perform COVID-19 molecular, PCR and sequencing testing as well as testing for other infectious agents. The RSI will maintain and contribute to increasing testing capacity. The RSI will contribute to the design, validation and implementation of new assays to expand infectious disease detection for SARS-CoV-2 and other infectious disease pathogens; contribute the assessment of new methods for sequencing and with the validation and implementation of genetic sequencing to further characterize pathogens and emerging infectious diseases. The RSI will perform data analyses, interpretation, and reporting of sequencing data to inform public health decisions. The incumbent will perform other appropriate related duties.

 

This position is supported by the New York State Public Health Corps Fellowship Program.

 

Successful completion of the Public Health Essentials certificate program will be required.
