Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in microbiology, biology, molecular biology or a related field and three years of research experience; OR a Master’s degree in a related field and two years of research experience; OR a Doctorate in a related field.


This position requires that the incumbent will report to the official work location and live within commuting distance to the official work location. Telecommuting may not be available. If telecommuting is available, the incumbent will be required to have a telephone/mobile device, and internet access.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working with molecular methods for the detection and/or characterization of viral pathogens. Experience with developing or assessing molecular methods. Experience handling human pathogens. Experience writing and presenting oral scientific communications.



The Research Scientist II (RSII) will work closely and collaborate with Virology team members to continue to develop plans and protocols for infectious disease preparedness and response. This work will include LRN and CDC developed methods, as well as those developed within the LVD, for the rapid detection and characterization of agents, and ongoing development and improvements to infrastructure for rapid scale up of services for emergency response situations. The incumbent will maintain competency and certification in all required areas including BSL-3 practices and various molecular detection methods. The incumbent will also contribute to updating the LVD and DOH pandemic response plans and the maintenance of associated records and databases. The RSII will contribute to the investigation and development of improved and modified laboratory methods, including new chemistries and platforms, data analysis and transmission pipelines, perform requested custom analyses, and analyze results and generate reports to inform public health decisions. Monitor relevant laboratory QA systems. The incumbent will perform other appropriate related duties.
