Chronic diseases and conditions – such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, obesity, stroke, and arthritis – are the leading causes of disability and death in New York State. Higher rates of COVID-19 hospitalization and mortality among individuals with underlying conditions, such as obesity and related chronic diseases, underscore the importance of a coordinated and comprehensive response to promote healthier living. Not all communities have the same access to safe and affordable housing, quality healthcare, educational attainment, healthy environments, public safety, employment, and income, which lead to health inequities in terms of health status for racial and ethnic populations – a disparity starkly demonstrated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

This position is supported by the New York State Public Health Corps Fellowship Program.

Successful completion of the Public Health Essentials certificate program will be required.
