The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) is seeking a dedicated and experienced visionary leader with a passion for advancing public health and improving the lives of individuals across the Commonwealth. The incumbent will by assist with surveillance, program evaluation, research, strategic planning, data dissemination, and other advanced analytics to address Bureau priorities, including tobacco, obesity, cancer and chronic disease prevention, racial equity and the social determinants of health, violence and injury prevention, sexual and domestic violence, adolescent and school- based health, and sexual and reproductive health.

The Director will have extensive analytic and evaluation skills, including development of cross-cutting evaluation frameworks; experience with the conceptualization, implementation, interpretation and dissemination of complex analyses; experience with a breadth of analytic methods, such as quantitative analysis, mixed-methods, community-based participatory research methods and partnership analysis; data visualization and communication; project management and supervisory expertise, experience in implementing complex projects and multiple deadlines, collaboration and communication skills. The Director will act as a senior manager within the bureau and must be able to manage complex bureaucratic systems while advocating for staff needs.

This vital position sits in the Office of Statistics and Evaluation (OSE) in the Bureau of Community Health and Prevention (BCHAP) working with colleagues and the Bureau Director to implement the Bureau’s management agenda and assist in providing strategic direction and leadership in its work. It also represents and often serves as the spokesperson for the Department on commissions, coalitions, governmental task forces, policy-making bodies, advisory boards, and public meetings.

Our ideal candidate has:

  • A passion for, and understanding of social determinants of health and a commitment to health equity, particularly racial equity, and racial justice.
  • An ability to provide vision and leadership across the office to advocate for and integrate use of data and analysis into strategic design
  • At least 6 years of  management experience in Public Health or a related field
  • A deep understanding of research methodology, logic models, statistics, health information technology and data exchange, technical report writing, epidemiological statistics and design, programming languages, SAS.
