Overview

Staff Scientist, Structural Bioinformatics Core

Vaccine Research Center

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Vaccine Research Center (VRC) is recruiting for a staff scientist in the Structural Bioinformatics Core (SBIS) of the Structural Biology Section (SBS), Virology Laboratory, at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The goal of SBS is to apply structural biology to vaccine development, with SBIS specifically focusing on the application of computational biology and structural bioinformatics tools to design effective vaccines as well as to improve therapeutic antibodies against human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and other pathogens.

The successful candidate will use their training and work experience in applying computational tools to bring efficient and cost-effective solutions to problems related to the following:

1.     Analysis of immunogen and antibody structure and function

2.     Computationally assisted analysis of sera

3.     Bioinformatics involving next-generation sequencing of B-cell transcripts (Antibodyomics)

4.     Application of computational techniques to structure-based immunogen and antibody design

5.     Application of data science technologies to analyze diverse scientific data sets to identify new patterns to obtain new scientific knowledge.

The successful applicant will use their knowledge and skills to advance solutions to structural bioinformatics challenges (such as immunogen design and antibody improvement) and lead the evaluation of those designs. The successful applicant will apply their structural bioinformatics expertise to develop state-of-the-art technologies for the analysis of macromolecular structural information of immunogens and antibodies to enhance their functionality. Furthermore, the candidate will develop and use machine learning algorithms to process and predict complex experimental data, such as binding and neutralization data.

In addition to the above responsibilities, the staff scientist is expected to do the following:

·      Provide supervision, mentorship, and training for SBIS research staff and fellows

·      Coordinate and oversee scientific projects for all SBIS research staff and fellows

·      Establish and participate in research and development collaborations with other NIH investigators and/or outside organizations, serving as the main point of contact

·      Identify funding opportunities and independently develop proposals for funding applications

·      Act as lead for SBIS vaccine design and antibody improvement projects as well as for Antibodyomics projects

·      Serve as a member of NIH-wide working groups related to bioinformatics and data science

·      File and patent novel vaccines, improved antibodies, and other intellectual property related to SBIS research

·      Attend and present at domestic and international conferences

Requirements

·      Doctoral degree in bioinformatics or related discipline

·      At least 10 years of direct experience in bioinformatics, structure-based design principles, computational engineering, and statistical analysis

·      At least 2 years of experience in leading research teams and directing scientific projects for junior staff

·      Established record of publication in high-quality, peer-reviewed scientific publications

·      Experience with intellectual property; evidence of patent inventorship (at least one)

·      Artificial intelligence/machine learning engineering experience with an established track record of successful delivery of state-of-the-art solutions

U.S. citizenship is not required.

The salary will be based on the individual’s qualifications and experience, in the range of $148,318 – $176,300.
