Position Description
The Department of Public Health (DPH) at North Dakota State University (NDSU) invites applicants for Assistant/Associate Professors of Epidemiology, 9-month, full-time, tenure-track positions. We seek collaborative individuals engaged in epidemiologic research with preference for a funded research portfolio that compliments current department faculty research areas. These topics include, but are not limited to, epidemiology methods, infectious disease, health equity, gerontology, American Indian public health, maternal child health, nutrition, chronic disease, and mental health. We especially encourage applications from members of racial/ethnic minority groups, women, individuals with disabilities, and veterans.

The major focus of this position will be to establish an active, independent, externally funded research program in epidemiology/public health. Additional expectations for this position include, but are not limited to, developing and teaching courses in epidemiology, in both face-to-face and online/distance formats, mentoring graduate students, and serving on Department and College committees. In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the research, education, and practice mission of the department, contribute to the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) accreditation competencies and requirements, and engage in student recruitment. This position reports directly to the DPH Chair.

Qualifications

Minimum

  • Doctorate in public health or related field
  • Evidence of collaborative scholarly contributions in the field of public health including grants, peer-reviewed publications, or professional meeting presentations
  • Experience successfully teaching epidemiology courses or guest lectures in a university setting
  • Effective oral and written communication skills

Preferred

  • Professional public health training or certification (e.g., MPH, MS in Public Health related area, or CPH)
  • Experience with graduate public health teaching
  • Experience with graduate student mentoring
  • Active engagement in university, department, or community service
  • Scholarly contributions in epidemiologic research including publications or presentations
  • Research interests that complement existing faculty research areas
  • Established and funded independent research program or evidence of ability to establish an independent research program
  • Knowledge/experience in at least one of the existing specializations within the NDSU MPH program (Epidemiology – General, Infectious Diseases; Community Health Sciences; MCH)

The Department of Public Health

The DPH offers a Master of Public Health (MPH), which is accredited through CEPH. We currently offer the MPH in two specializations: Epidemiology (which includes subplans: Infectious Diseases, and American Indian Public Health) and Community Health Sciences (with a subplan in American Indian Public Health). We also offer a dual MPH/PharmD (with the School of Pharmacy) and several graduate certificates (including American Indian Public Health, Infectious Disease Management, and Generalist Public Health). A graduate certificate in maternal child health (MCH) is pending approval. There is also a Public Health minor for undergraduate students. The NDSU MPH program offers classes both on-campus and through distance learning technology (synchronous and asynchronous).

Currently, the DPH has 10 faculty members, 13 research and administrative staff, and four active adjunct/affiliate graduate faculty. Approximately 30 MPH students matriculate each year, with on average 30% using our distance learning option (pre-COVID). Our student body is diverse, with students from a variety of race and ethnic backgrounds and a strong core of international students joining us each year. The DPH is housed in the NDSU College of Health Professions, where it benefits from strong relationships with the Schools of Nursing and Pharmacy.

The DPH has two Centers with opportunities for collaboration: the American Indian Public Health Resource Center and the Center for Immunization Research and Education, and it has joint appointments with the Center for Biobehavioral Research at Sanford Research. There are also opportunities for collaboration across campus including other academic departments, the Center for Social Research, the Global Institute of Food Security & International Agriculture, and the Challey Institute for Global Innovation and Growth.
