The Public Health Institute (PHI) is seeking a Health Educator I for the Health Intervention Projects for Underserved Populations (HIPUP).

The Health Educator will work for the SAMHSA.CSAT-funded study, “Mariposa TCE (Targeted Capacity Expansion)”. The study aims to reduce substance use and HIV risk behaviors and increase access to HIV/VH testing and treatment and trauma informed treatment services for transwomen of color (18 years and older) in Alameda and San Francisco counties.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities include the following:

• Conduct community/online outreaches targeting transwomen

• Build collaborative working relationships with CBOs and other social groups

• Provide Motivational Enhancement Intervention sessions to participants in order to reduce substance abuse and HIV risk behaviors

• Refer participants to HIV/Vital Hepatitis testing at Asian Health Services or other collaborating clinics

• Enroll and navigate clients to complete the Stable Housing and Employment (SHE) in which they will gain skills and knowledge about job application and finding affordable housing in a safe neighborhood.

• Conduct intake and follow-up risk assessments

• Collect and enter assessment and outcome data

• Work closely with Asian Health Services and Instituto Familiar de la Raza to implement various Mariposa TCE activities

• Manage materials and facility logistics for outreach events and activities

• Work with transwomen for intervention activities to increase community level awareness through media campaigns and social network platforms

• Facilitate support groups targeting transwomen

• Process cash payments to participants

• Work includes some non-standard hours, such as evenings and weekends

• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

• Required: High school diploma, GED, or equivalent experience

• Preferred: BA in social/health sciences or equivalent experience At least 1 year of relevant work experience required

• Some working experience in the transgender communities

• Strong knowledge of HIV, substance abuse, and health disparity issues in transgender community

• Public speaking and advanced facilitation skills for leading large and small group presentations and activities

• Ability to maintain accurate record keeping

• Ability to recognize and resolve problems as they occur

• Good attention to detail, self-motivation, ability to work independently as well as part of a team, and good organizational skills

• Ability and comfort in engaging in open and nonjudgmental conversations with participants from diverse backgrounds (e.g., ethnic, gender, and sexual minorities) with sensitivity

• Prior computer experience (e.g., Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel)

• Must be willing to and able to commute to various locations other than the assigned office, mostly in Alameda County and San Francisco County.

• Ability to work some non-standard hours, including evenings and weekends.

Preference:

• Some experience working for social and AIDS service agencies

• Some experience I individual counseling or case management

• Knowledge of the HIV service system in San Francisco and Alameda counties

• This is a full time (40 hours/week) position based in Oakland, CA.
