Program Description:

Health Families Bushwick (HFB) identifies expecting families in and around Bushwick, Brooklyn and Ridgewood, Queens – who experience stress and may be at risk for child abuse and/or poor health and/or child development issues and provides weekly home visiting services. The goal is to support HFB families to develop positive attachment and interactions with their infants, master good parenting skills, increase their knowledge about child development and the use of health and social services and to improve educational and/or employment status for the parents who are eligible to receive program services until the child enrolls in school.

Position Summary:

Healthy Families Bushwick seeks a bilingual Spanish-English Family Support Specialist (FSS). The FSS will outreach to families in the community, enroll families in services, and work with the families over the long term (3-5 years) to provide support, health education, and connection to community resources. The culturally-responsive services provided by the FSS are generally provided in family’s homes. Please note that currently due to COVID-19 visits are being provided by video visit, though occasional distributions of family support items happen in person while following proper social distancing guidelines. In order to perform the full range of FSS services, staff are provided with significant training and skills building.

Specifically, the Family Support Specialist (FSS) will:

Outreach to families in the community to inform them about services available including Home Visiting.
Implement the Healthy Families NY (HFNY) screening tool to identify families who meet criteria for participation
Work with the families on their caseload over the long term until the child enters an educational program (Head Start or Kindergarten).
Provide prenatal, parenting and health education according to HFNY protocols
Promote optimal child development, enhance parent-child relationships and improve family support system through weekly home visits. Administer the ASQ to assess child development as well as other family and child screens.
Identify family needs and refer to other supportive agencies and services, including health care appointments.
Other tasks as requested by the Supervisor and Program Director to fulfill program needs.
Qualifications:

Associate degree in Early Childhood Development, Health, Social Work or related human service field, preferred.
Must be bilingual (Spanish) with strong writing and speaking skills.
Must have English skills sufficient to document notes about the work done with families
At least two years of experience home visiting and working with low-income, racially and ethnically diverse urban families, preferred.
High level of maturity and experience working with children (0-3 years old) and their families, preferred.
Strong knowledge of early childhood development, parenting skills and development of parent-child relationships, preferred.
Must be able to work a flexible schedule including some evenings and weekends
