With an annual budget of $2.3 billion and more than 6,000 employees throughout the five boroughs, the New York City Department of Health, and Mental Hygiene (NYC DOHMH) is one of the largest public health agencies in the world, serving 8 million New Yorkers from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Since January 2020, DOHMH has been fighting the COVID-19 pandemic – activities include but are not limited to: surveillance & epidemiological investigations; lab testing; engaging and providing guidance to healthcare partners; ensuring the safety & health of responders; providing timely and accurate information to the public; promoting the emotional health of New Yorkers and coordinating citywide COVID-19 vaccine administration. With grant funds from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), DOHMH is undertaking a new initiative to establish, expand, train, and sustain the public health workforce to support jurisdictional COVID-19 prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery initiatives over 2 years.
The selected candidate will be an employee of Public Health Solutions, a nonprofit organization which is the fiscal and administrative manager of the grant, but work will be supervised by DOHMH. This is a grant-funded position ending June 30, 2023.
The Bureau of Communications housed within the Office of External Affairs serves as the agency’s in-house publisher, marketer of trendsetting, culturally responsive campaigns and initiatives, maintains the agency’s website, and oversees new and social media outreach and efforts. Within Communications, the Digital Communications group is responsible for maintaining the Health Department as one of the leading providers of health information on the web and via social media.
Help build and maintain the agency’s external website, with a focus on the COVID-19 suite of pagesEdit, write, and manage content on the nyc.gov/health/coronavirus website.
Research, develop and implement digital strategies to keep COVID-19 content up to date, relevant, user-friendly, and dynamic.
Assist in the development and maintenance of copy standards for nyc.gov/health/coronavirus through communication of the Health Department’s style guidelines and working directly with key emergency response stakeholders to improve and maintain their content.
Craft urgent COVID-19 content in conjunction with the evolving science on COVID-19 and changing vaccine eligibility.
Ensure all digital communications are accessible.
Act as technical consultant on agency COVID-19 projects and initiatives to make services more readily accessible online to New Yorkers.
2.Enhance emergency communication preparedness and response.
Disseminate critical COVID-19 information, internally and externally, during emergency activations.
Develop and maintain emergency information materials on the web that can be deployed rapidly during incidents, including the agency response to COVID-19.
Assist in special projects from the Managing Editor as assigned, including project-managing language translation initiatives for the website related to the agency’s evolving response to the COVID-19 public health emergency.
A Bachelor’s degree from and accredited College or University.
Superior editing and writing skills; familiarity with the Associated Press Stylebook, government communications and plain language principles.
Knowledge and experience with a Content Management System and HTML.
Familiarity with search engine optimization (SEO) and how to leverage SEO functionality.
Willingness to be on-call for work after hours and on weekends in an emergency, including during COVID-19 surges.
This is a temporary grant-funded position ending June 30, 2023.
Preference may be given to individuals residing in New York City (5 boroughs) or surrounding New York State counties.
This individual will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies.
