Since January 2020, DOHMH has been combating the COVID-19 pandemic- activities include but are not limited to: surveillance and epidemiological investigations; lab testing; engaging and providing guidance to healthcare partners; ensuring the safety and health of responders; providing timely and accurate information to the public; promoting the emotional health of New Yorkers and coordinating citywide COVID-19 vaccine administration. With grant funds from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), DOHMH is undertaking a new initiative to establish, expand, train, and sustain the public health workforce to support jurisdictional COVID-19 prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery initiatives over 2 years.
The selected candidate will be an employee of Public Health Solutions, a nonprofit organization which is the fiscal and administrative manager of the grant but will work and be supervised by DOHMH. This is a grant-funded position ending June 30, 2023.
The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Public Health Laboratory (NYC PHL) mission is to safeguard the health of all New York City residents by providing quality laboratory testing services that address the needs of the NYC DOHMH and its community partners to prevent and respond to clinical and environmental public health concerns. In order to ensure that NYC PHL can successfully respond to emerging public health concerns in a timely manner, we are seeking to hire a laboratory professional with experience in training and operational planning to serve as NYC PHL’s Laboratory Cross Training Coordinator. NYC PHL has strong collaborations with the Centers for Disease Control and public health laboratories throughout the nation. This is an excellent opportunity to join our team of more than 200 laboratory professionals, research scientists, safety experts, and fellows, as they continue to make history at the world’s first municipal public health laboratory.
Summary of Position:
DOHMH has an opening for a Laboratory Cross Training Coordinator reporting to the Director of Operations at PHL. This position will work with senior PHL leadership to ensure laboratory staff are appropriately trained and cross-trained for emergencies including COVID-19 and other emerging pathogens.
Specifically, the Laboratory Cross Training Coordinator will:
• Oversee training and cross-training efforts at PHL, and ensure staff are adequately trained in multiple critical testing areas, including COVID-19, biothreat, and other emerging pathogens.
• Develop and implement systems to track training activities for staff working at PHL and PHL operated COVID/Express Quickie sites.
• Collaborate with Emergency Preparedness staff to ensure staff are properly trained and in a timely manner.
• Develop testing surge planning documents and coordinate these planning activities with internal DOHMH partners.
• Conduct data analysis efforts using laboratory test results to monitor testing performance, volume and confirmed cases.
• Run data queries, generate technical and non-technical reports, and develop analysis programs to evaluate and communicate lab testing performance, results, and testing volumes.
Qualifications and Requirements:
• MPH, MS, or PhD
• Previous experience working in fields related to management, laboratory science, and data analysis
• Capacity and willingness to learn laboratory informatics, bioinformatics, laboratory testing algorithms and result interpretations and ability to use basic statistical programs.
• The ideal candidate for this position must be a pro-active and self-motivated individual with the ability to work in teams and in a highly dynamic environment with multiple stakeholders and timelines.
• Experience with stakeholder engagement and project management.
• Excellent communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills.
• Strong analytical skills and ability to manage and report complex information.
• Experience with data collection, analysis, and interpretation.
• Desire to grow professionally, develop new skills and willingness to work outside of comfort zone.
• Experience working with the public health sector and coordinating projects involving multiple stakeholders.
• Ability to prioritize and work in fast-paced environment with hard deadlines.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
• This individual will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies.
• Preference may be given to individuals residing in New York City (5 boroughs) or surrounding New York State counties.
• This individual must reside in the tri-state area (NY, NJ, CT) by their confirmed start date.
• This is a temporary grant-funded position ending June 30, 2023.
