Associate Professor, Tenure Track, SPPH/Epidemiology

Overview

The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB Health) is seeking an outstanding infectious disease epidemiologist to join as a tenure-track faculty member in the Department of Epidemiology in the new School of Public and Population Health (SPPH) (https://www.utmb.edu/spph). The mission of our department is to apply epidemiologic methods toward improving health and function and reducing health inequities across communities.  The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary faculty group in the SPPH that engages in research and the teaching of graduate students and medical and other health professions trainees.  The candidate will hold a joint appointment in the Department of Global Health and Emerging Diseases and will have the opportunity to collaborate closely with infectious disease faculty from across the institution and collaborators around the world.  UTMB has a long history of excellence in infectious disease clinical care, training, and research, with multiple Centers, Institutes, and Departments engaged in the study of tropical and emerging infectious pathogens, global health, vector-borne diseases, and host response.  UTMB is also home to the Galveston National Laboratory (GNL), one of only two university-based facilities in the United States capable of studying high-consequence pathogens at BSL and ABSL levels 2, 3, and 4 (https://www.utmb.edu/gnl).

Applicants must have a doctoral degree (PhD, DrPH, or comparable degree) in Epidemiology, with particular research and teaching experience in infectious disease epidemiology.  Preferred qualifications include strong quantitative skills and a record of extramural funding or evidence of ability to secure research funding.

Research is an essential pillar to the success of UTMB’s mission. The successful applicants will be expected to contribute to the research activities of the department, which include conducting and publishing research and obtaining external funding for research or training programs. Opportunities for research collaborations exist with more than 40 research centers and institutes located on campus, covering a wide range of research interests including aging, rehabilitation sciences, women’s health, environmental health, translational sciences, infectious diseases, vaccines, and bioethics (see www.utmb.edu/centers/ for more information). In addition, a critical mass of researchers work with large data including administrative and medical records as well as national and international longitudinal cohort studies.

The SPPH administers graduate programs in Public Health (MPH), Population Health Sciences (MS, PhD), Rehabilitation Sciences (PhD), and Bioethics and Health Humanities (MA, PhD); it also trains medical students and residents on topics in prevention and public health. The successful applicants will also be expected to contribute to these educational activities including teaching and mentoring graduate and medical students.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
