Overview

The Harm Reduction Health Educator, under the direction of the Supervisor of Overdose Prevention and Harm Reduction, is responsible for the promotion of harm reduction principles and education through evidence-based practices. This position will also provide support for Northwest Ohio Syringe Services. This position is grant funded and subject to funding availability.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Health Promotion or closely related field
  • A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation are required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certification as a Health Education Specialist (CHES)
  • An understanding of the issues that people with Opioid Use Disorder or people who use substances experience
  • Strong understanding of harm reduction practices and principles

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with Harm Reduction Program Manager to create a program for academic detailing of harm reduction practices and principles for health care services.
  • Coordinate and provide interactive, educational outreach to health care services to provide unbiased, non-commercial, evidence-based information about harm reduction with the goal of improving patient care.
  • Promote harm reduction initiatives throughout Lucas County.
  • Conduct outreach to distribute educational materials, sterile injection supplies and other safer drug use materials to people who use and/or inject drugs.
  • Develops, conducts, and coordinates programmatic needs assessments and other public health surveys.
  • Demonstrating strict adherence to all Federal, State, and Local laws, regulations/guidelines; including HIPAA regulations, as well as grant requirements where applicable.
  • Work with Harm Reduction Program Manager to summarize program activities on a monthly basis to share with stakeholders.
  • Coordinates with Lucas County Opiate Coalition members and media outlets as needed to disseminate appropriate information.
  • Work collectively with coalition members to establish new relationships and to identify strategies for harm reduction education.
