Associate Vice Chancellor for Health and Wellness and

Chief Wellbeing Officer

 

The University of California, Santa Cruz seeks an experienced and dynamic leader who will oversee key services that address the wellness of students in a coordinated manner. The Associate Vice Chancellor for Health and Wellness and Chief Wellbeing Officer (AVC/CWO) will be responsible for engaging the entire campus community in creating, strengthening, and maintaining a culture of holistic wellbeing and belonging that supports students and others in order for them to be successful.

 

In alignment with the priorities and mission of UC Santa Cruz, the AVC/CWO must lead within an equity-based framework—incorporating a deep commitment to diversity and inclusion in all aspects of their work. The AVC/CWO must be innovative and offer a demonstrated capacity for effective change management throughout their career. They must have a complex understanding of the many challenges facing today’s students and be prepared to engage the university in a broad and coordinated effort to address those needs. Ultimately, the AVP/CWO must be a bold administrator and visionary supervisor with a nuanced understanding of and vast experience in the areas within the portfolio.

 

The AVC/CWO is ultimately responsible for the following services and programs that comprise Student Health Services: primary care clinic, same day clinic, counseling, psychiatry, high complexity laboratory, radiology, pharmacy, optometry, billing and insurance, student health education, outreach, and the confidential advocacy support for survivors of sexual assault, relationship violence, and stalking. The AVC/CWO is the campus HIPAA Privacy Officer. Successful candidates will demonstrate skills and experience in supervision, compliance, budget management, problem solving, innovation, and collaboration. A deep appreciation for, and dedication to, student development, diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice is essential.

 

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Required

 

• Master’s degree in related area (including health care administration, public administration, health systems management, medicine, clinical or counseling psychology, nursing, higher education administration) and/or equivalent experience/training

 

• Demonstrated track record of progressively responsible leadership, administrative, and supervisory experience in a health care setting

 

• Advanced knowledge of health care administration, systems, and policies serving a college age population

 

• Ability to engage an equity lens, an understanding of intersectional identities and related unique issues, and collaborate with key stakeholders on campus policy, procedures, and quality improvement and implementation of evidence-based programs, practices, and support that work to decrease the health disparities for students

 

• Highly experienced with demonstrated leadership and team-building skills

 

• Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills

 

• Knowledge of strategic funding of health care programs and operations, public relations, and marketing, fundraising

 

• Highly experienced and skilled at planning, organizing, implementing and evaluating activities appropriate to the advancement of organizational goals

 

• Knowledge of quality assessment and improvement procedures and best practices in health care management, patient care, and prevention programs

 

• Proven ability to develop, implement, and direct business processes, policies, procedures, and strategic and organizational planning activities

 

• Excellent interpersonal, cultural competency and conflict resolution skills

 

• Ability to follow, model and maintain appropriate conduct that adheres to the UCSC Principles of Community

 

• Experience supervising, developing and motivating professional staff in a union environment, with an ability to conduct performance management when necessary

 

• Significant, progressive health care administrative experience including: the design, development, and direction of interdisciplinary health-related programs and services and responsibility for fiscal management, budget development, and human resources

 

Preferred

 

• An MD, PhD, or other doctorate degree in health care administration, public administration, health systems management, medicine, clinical or counseling psychology, nursing, higher education administration or other related field

 

• Direct experience in college health or in a related area of clinical practice and administration. Additional college health or public health training, experience in clinical preventive services, and a campus or community health background

 

• Significant experience as a licensed healthcare professional or administrator

About the Division of Student Affairs and Success

The UC Santa Cruz Division of Student Affairs and Success (DSAS), led by the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Success, consists of nearly 250 team members spanning 3 major units and 21 departments. In addition to Student Health and Wellness, the Student Success and Equity and Student Development and Engagement teams are each led by an associate vice chancellor.

 

Our division provides campus-wide coordination and leadership for student success programs, activities, and initiatives. We also do our work through a range of resource centers dedicated to providing direct student support. Our work is grounded in educational equity, institutional responsibility, and an unfettered commitment to supporting the whole student.
