About the Department
As one of the oldest medical schools in the country, the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine (COM) has a reputation for training best-in-class health care professionals and developing cutting-edge procedures and research that improves the health and clinical care of patients. In partnership with the UC Health academic healthcare system and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, College of Medicine’s faculty are transforming the world of medicine every day. The Department of Environmental and Public Health Sciences (DEPHS) is a top-tier department with world-renowned faculty and staff and its Master of Public Health (MPH) Program is ranked 79th according to US News & World Reports. DEPHS has one non-tenure education track faculty position available at the rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor with salary offer to be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience.
The DEPHS conducts world-renowned research and offers graduate training in environmental health, epidemiology, occupational safety, molecular genetics and public health. The department has over 45 full-time faculty and over 250 students in six divisions (Biostatistics and Bioinformatics, Epidemiology, Environmental Genetics and Molecular Toxicology, Environmental and Occupational Hygiene, Occupational and Environmental Medicine, and Public Health Sciences). The DEPHS’s research portfolio for environmental, occupational and public health is among the top in the nation. Research funding for the DEPHS comes from NIH, the American Heart Association, NIOSH, industry, foundations, and a variety of federal, state and local agencies.
The Public Health Program is a Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH)-accredited graduate program offering the Master of Public Health (MPH) degree. This program is among the largest graduate programs in the DEPHS and fastest growing in the COM. In addition, the COM established an MD-MPH Program. It currently has over 150 full and part-time students, and offers seven concentrations including biostatistics, epidemiology, environmental public health, global health, health education and promotion, health services and management, and occupational public health. Newly hired faculty will have the opportunity to collaborate through educational and service activities through public health community partners, such as the Cincinnati Public Health Department, the Hamilton County Public Health Department, and the Northern Kentucky Health Department. In addition, collaborative activities are encouraged with leading health systems, including Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center; the University of Cincinnati Medical Center and its affiliated for profit and non-for-profit organizations; and federal agencies, such as the EPA and NIOSH.
The ideal candidate will be expected to:
- Teach public health and CEPH-accredited courses at the graduate and senior undergraduate levels in the primary areas of health services management, health policy, and epidemiology; other desirable areas include population health, healthcare finance, and future courses that will strengthen our program.
- Advise and mentor students in academic development, curriculum achievement, applied practical experience (e.g., practicum), and integrated learning experiences (e.g., capstone/thesis).
- Program assessment and familiarity with diverse instructional strategies (e.g., online, blended, in-person) that reinforce academic success through closely aligned learning objectives, assignments, and course activities.
- Community engagement and involvement with professional societies through service.
- Other duties as assigned from the program.
- Scholarship through independent and/or collaborative research and publication is not required for this non-tenure education track position. However, if the candidate is offered an education tenure track position at hiring, or after hiring, switches to tenure track at a later date, scholarship will be required.
Duties will include:
- Responsibilities for the teaching activities for our students, residents, and fellows.
- Building upon the university’s public health offerings, including MD/MPH degree, 4+1 Programs, and the interdisciplinary undergraduate degree in public health
- Working closely with core public health and participating faculty of DEPHS to build the various academic programs in public health by development collaborations with a variety of intramural and extramural partners, teach public health courses, mentor undergraduate and graduate students.
Required qualifications include:
- A doctoral degree in the public health field or a related field such as health education, epidemiology, health behavior, health services, health economics and finance, or allied health sciences.
- Ability to apply and instill advanced knowledge through teaching, service and public health practice.
- Prior teaching experience in public health.
- Experience or basic understanding in curriculum and course development according to CEPH-standards.
- Prior experience in advising and mentoring graduate or senior undergraduate students.
Additional Qualifications Considered
Potential candidates with previous experience teaching in CEPH-accredited programs or establishing credentialed continuing education (CEUs/CECs) programs are considered highly desirable; as are those with diverse and applied experience in public health policy at the local, state, and national levels.
