Research Health Science Specialist (HSR&D Research Associate)

This full-time research associate (RA) position, with the Durham VA Center of Innovation to Accelerate Discovery and Practice Transformation, Durham VA Health Care System, is in support of research projects conducted by the Center. This position is for a 40 hour/week position.


This position will specifically support the Veterans Affairs Caregiver Support Partnered Evaluation Project (VA CARES) a Quality Enhancement Research Initiative (QUERI).


Job Description: The RA will be responsible for supporting the day-to-day conduct of evaluation-related activities including recruitment of participants (i.e. caregivers of Veterans) using survey protocols, conducting phone interviews, qualitative data collection, and other partner evaluation activities. The RA will work in a team environment with investigators, a project coordinator, and research assistants.


Major responsibilities will include:

1.    Participate in human subjects research training and adhere to data use agreements, memorandums of understanding, approval study procedures and OMB requirements

2.    Collect and manage study participant data in electronic tracking databases (i.e., REDCap and Qualtrics).

3.    Assisting in completing literature searches

4.    Recruit participants (patients and/or their caregivers, VA staff) and conduct interviews via telephone

5.    Produce, compile and mail study materials to participants or potential participants.

6.    Electronic retrieval of manuscript pdfs

7.    Work collaboratively with all members of the study team to achieve study goals.

8.    Conduct data quality checks

9.    Develop and edit formatted results tables/figures/conference posters

10.  Build and maintain Endnote databases

11.  Provide general research assistance to the co-leaders of the project as needed, such as with dissemination and communication efforts.


Requirements:  Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office programs is required. Knowledge/experience with computer data collection/data entry software, attention to detail, and experience in conduct of human subjects research including subject recruitment, enrollment, and interviewing. Minimum degree requirement is Bachelor’s or graduate/higher level degree in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences. Salary and GS level will be commensurate with education and experience. Must be a US citizen to apply.

This position is for a GS 7 (begins at $46,566) or GS 9 (begins at $56,959) as commensurate with education and experience. Must be a US citizen to apply.  Benefits included. This position is anticipated to be an in-person position, but there may also be teleworking arrangements. This is not a fully remote position.
