Chair, Department of Health Policy


Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) and the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine (VUSM) seek a new Chair of the Department of Health Policy. In the first decade of its existence, this Department has grown to become a nationally recognized Department of distinguished faculty who are generating important scholarship that impacts not only the national discourse, but key policy decisions within the U.S. health system and internationally. With a major research university and a preeminent medical center, Vanderbilt is an ideal laboratory to explore health policy and population health science challenges and to identify solutions. The Department is currently comprised of faculty members with broad areas of expertise across Health Policy, Epidemiology, Health Economics, Preventive Medicine, Pharmacoepidemiology, Global Health, Health Services Research, Health Behavior, Health Equity, and Medical Ethics.


Reporting to Dr. Jeff Balser, who serves as President and Chief Executive Officer of Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Dean of the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, the Department Chair will have programmatic oversight and responsibility for advancing the research initiatives, making diversity and inclusion intentional, faculty development and education programs within the Department. Succeeding the founding Chair, the next Chair will be charged with building upon the excellent foundation in place and further expanding the Department’s impact to new areas of population health science and public health, including implementation science, health behavior, and health equity.


Leadership seeks an accomplished health policy or population health science leader (PhD, MD/PhD, MD, ScD, or equivalent degree) with an outstanding track record of accomplishment in research and education. This individual will have substantial administrative and leadership experience, in addition to overall achievements commensurate with appointment to the faculty at the rank of Full Professor with tenure in the VUSM.
